Red Vine - 葡萄の葉

Nelson, New Zealand

Nikon D200
AF Nikkor 35-135mm F3.5-4.5 @ 35mm (Macro)
F5.6, 1/60, ISO-100

This is not from the vineyard, but someone's yard.

  1. Again, this is slightly soft (hand-held + macro range) or not quite enough DOF. I need to set around F11 and use tripod. Now I need cable release fro D200. Well, I like the colour, so I posted here anyway.

  2. I think you are right Ben. A smaller aperture would have had a better chance of getting that whole group of red leaves sharp. Nevertheless, the color is particularly nice and grape vines are an attractive plant. The soft focus on the background green leaves is effective in giving depth to the image.

I think when you use a macro outside it's optimum minimal range you're always gonna get mixed results. I really don't think stopping up or a slower shutter would have afforded you much more in terms of sharpness other than a shallower depth of focus as substitution for detail. If anything use a longer lens and zoom back to the same focal lenght and you're result will be sharper. The cheap old AF Nikkor 70-300mm 4-5.6G is a good lens for this sort of macro image.

Apart from reviews I'd like to hear you own opinions on the D200 Ben, if you wouldn't mind could you send me an email about your pros cons and general thoughts on it. I'm still waying up options between D200 and D80.

  4. Thanks Gavin, T guess at least I succeeded to isolate the red leaves from back ground, That is plus.

    Cheers Photowannabe.

    Your are right, Ndiginiz.
I had this 35-135 on camera, and I should try same composition at telephoto side. Need more experiment for same subject. The photography is so interesting subject. I can only tell about D200 but I will send you short comment to you.
